Jerri Lynn Lippert was named the first female superintendent of the West Allegheny School District in Pennsylvania in June.

Jerri Lynn Lippert was named the first female superintendent of the West Allegheny School District in Pennsylvania in June. She was the chief academic officer of Pittsburgh Public Schools, and started in West Allegheny in July.

Service award

Norman Eck, recently retired superintendent of Northwest Arctic Borough Schools in Alaska, received the Chukchi College Service Award for his record of outstanding education service in the region. As superintendent, he strengthened partnerships between the district and the University of Alaska, and helped create a new magnet school.

New state superintendent

Michael Martirano was unanimously elected West Virginia’s state superintendent of schools by the state school board in July. He will take over in September, and plans to focus on improving graduation rates and closing the achievement gap between poor and minority students and their peers.

He was formerly superintendent of St. Mary’s County Public Schools in Maryland.

Principal of the year

Kevin Wynkoop, principal of Ballard High School in Seattle Public Schools, was named the Washington State Principal of the Year in June by the Association of Washington School Principals. He created a counseling program to increase graduation rates and offered students rewards for raising their grades.
