Meria Carstarphen named Atlanta Public Schools superintendent

Before moving to Atlanta Public Schools, Meria Carstarphen superintendent of the Austin ISD.

Atlanta superintendent chosen

Meria Carstarphen was named superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. She has served as superintendent of the Austin ISD in Texas since 2009, and helped raise graduation rates to an all-time high of nearly 83 percent in 2012. She will start the Atlanta job in July.

New state superintendent

Steve Staples was appointed Virginia state superintendent of public instruction in April by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Staples recently served as executive director of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, and was named Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 1997.

Outstanding principal award

Principal Mary Lou Wycinski of Millcreek Elementary School, part of Southern Local School District in Corning, Ohio, was awarded the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools Outstanding Principal Award. During her nine years on the job, she has helped the school achieve a top grade on the state report card despite a high number of impoverished students.

Principal of the year

Principal Richard Appel of Chilton Middle School, part of Chilton Public Schools in Wisconsin, was named 2014 Middle School Principal of the Year in April by the Department of Public Instruction and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators. He has fostered learning opportunities outside of school, and 85 percent of students are involved with extracurricular activities.
