After Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and the Republicans in the state's Senate passed a provision stripping public employees of collective bargaining rights on March 9, the Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell said the teachers unions "won't back down."

Michigan State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan has asked every school district in the state to identify students with parents serving in the military and then to provide them with additional support as part of a state and nationwide initiative.
$1.8 Million Mistake
On March 2, Maria Goodloe- Johnson was fired as superintendent of Seattle (Wash.) Public Schools after a state audit found $1.8 million worth of possible financial mismanagement. She is being held responsible, although no evidence points to her involvement.
The American Association of School Administrators named Marc Johnson, superintendent of Sanger (Calif.) Unified School District, the 2011 AASA National Superintendent of the Year. Johnson was chosen for his success in turning around low-performing schools.
Don't Blame Perry
Thousands rallied at the Texas state capital on March 12 protesting Gov. rick perry's budget proposal that would reduce funding to schools by nearly $10 billion. Perry said the state is not to blame if 100,000 people lose their jobs in schools and that everyone must tighten their belt.
