Oceanographer David L. Evans was appointed executive director of the National Science Teachers Association in February, and will work to promote STEM education and professional development for the Next Generation Science Standards.
Nola Wellman of the Eanes (Texas) ISD was named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Computer Education Association, for recognizing the importance of technology in teaching and learning, and promoting its use throughout the district.
WORKING FOR FREE
Superintendent Charles Machesky of the Uniontown (Pa.) Area School District officially retired a year ago, but stayed on the job to help guide a major building project. He decided to continue working without pay through March 2016, to serve the city where he grew up.
Former elementary school principal Cindy Marten was hired as superintendent of San Diego USD, the second-largest district in California. As a principal she excelled at creating a system of small class sizes that led to significant gains in academic performance.
SELFLESS SERVICE AWARD
Superintendent Elliott Duchon of the Jurupa (Calif.) USD will receive an award from the Association of California School Administrators for exemplifying selfless service. Each month, he delivers food to orphanages throughout Baja, Calif.
