Architect of Change
Jesús Chávez, superintendent of Round Rock (Texas) ISD, received the Architect of Change Award at the Blueprint for Educational Change Leaders Summit. In the past few years, Chávez increased graduation rates for low-income students by more than 18 percent.
School Leadership Award
Principal Harriet R. MacLean of the San Rafael (Calif.) City School District received the American Association of School Administrators’ 2013 Women in School Leadership Award, for her work leading faculty and community to a total redesign of the school.
Daniel O’Connell, North Shore (Mass.) Technical High School superintendent-director, was selected by the school committee to lead the new $133 million Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School, a merger of two regional vocational schools.
U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced the STEM Opportunities Act of 2013 in March. The legislation promotes research on participating women and minorities in STEM, so policy makers can more effectively reduce barriers to STEM education.
Pittsfield (Mass.) Public Schools awarded an unprecedented five-year contract to incoming superintendent Jason McCandless for his commitment to the local school system.
