Investing in the Arts
Andrew Bott, principal of Orchard Gardens K8 School in Boston Public Schools, reinvested money used for the troubled school’s security infrastructure into the arts in 2010. As a result, today the school has one of the fastest student test improvement rates statewide.
PreK Boot Camp
The Rev. Darren Faulkner was named executive director of the Kansas City (Mo.) Freedom School PreK Boot Camp, a six-week program with the goal of preparing 4- and 5-year-olds with no previous preschool experience to enter kindergarten in Kansas City Public Schools.
End of Tenure
Baltimore schools CEO Andrés Alonso announced his resignation in May, ending a six-year tenure marked by reforms, including closing failing schools. Under his leadership, city schools saw growth in test scores, graduation rates, and school enrollment.
Rural District Care
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten helped spearhead a program in McDowell County (W.Va.) Schools to include adult literacy, drug rehabilitation programs, and basic medical care in schools in the impoverished district.
New Performance Index
Georgia State School Superintendent John Barge released the first-ever Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index in May, that measures school and district performance on a 100 point scale. It replaces the state’s No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress measurement.
