Jose Parra became superintendent of Irving ISD in Texas in December. Parra was superintendent of the 5,000-student Lockhart ISD, where he helped raise test scores and graduation rates. He aims to continue his efforts in Irving, which has 35,000 students—that’s seven times the size of Lockhart.
Michael McVey, superintendent of Steubenville City Schools in Ohio, was charged in November with three felony counts: one for tampering with evidence and two for obstructing justice, in the aftermath of the August 2012 rape of a 16-year-old female student. Three school employees were also indicted.
PRINCIPAL TO TECH LEADER
Thomas Lechner became Pinellas County Schools’ assistant superintendent of technology and information systems in November, after school board members changed the job description to require a less technical background. Lechner is formerly a district middle school principal.
Thomas Tucker, of Worthington City Schools in Ohio, was named superintendent of the year in November by the National Alliance of Black School Educators. Since the district hired Tucker in 2011, test scores and ratings by the state have improved.
Glenda Ritz, the Indiana superintendent of public instruction, announced in November two new programs to connect military personnel with schools. One is an after-school program in which National Guard members tutor students in reading, and the other is a scholarship program for veterans who want to become teachers.
