People Watch: Miami-Dade's Alberto Carvalho named superintendent of the year
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was named 2014 National Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents Association. Since he took the job in 2008, the district’s test scores and graduation rates have risen steadily. The district has also won awards for marked improvement in AP participation and performance.
Assistant principal award
Courtney Voshell, of Dover High School, part of the Capital School District in Delaware, was named 2014 National Assistant Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. She led the creation of professional learning communities to help teachers collaborate and share best practices, and these communities helped the failing school get back on track.
First female superintendent
Louise Clarke was named superintendent of New Jersey’s Carlstadt-East Rutherford Regional High School District in February. She is the first female leader in the district’s history, and will begin her tenure in July. She is currently the district’s director of curriculum and instruction.
National PTA director
Joanne E. Dunne was named interim executive director of the National PTA in February. She has more than 30 years of experience as a nonprofit association executive, and has worked in health care, government, military and management organizations.
