New course from Scenario Learning® outlines approach for administrators

Cincinnati, Ohio (June 25, 2014) – While schools are statistically a safe place for children and school staff, it’s vital that schools are prepared for all kinds of safety incidents – including an active shooter on campus. To help schools with this critical topic, Scenario Learning announces a new SafeSchools Training® Active Shooter for Administrators course, written by Michael and Chris Dorn, the nation’s leading school safety experts. Created for school and district administrators, the course outlines evidence-based methods to improve the odds of survival during an active shooter event.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook and other tragic incidents, administrators, teachers and parents are seeking information on how to best protect children if they are faced with a shooter on campus. Numerous approaches to an active shooter are widely discussed but many are not yet proven to be effective. Some current methodologies are inappropriate for schools with younger students or students with special needs, who may have mobility restrictions or a limited ability to react in a crisis. School insurers also report that employees have been injured and are at risk during drills related to untested, unproven active-shooter responses.

Developed in conjunction with Michael and Chris Dorn of Safe Havens International, the new SafeSchools Training Active Shooter for Administrators online course provides an overview for administrators that focuses on techniques that are proven to reduce the likelihood of violence on campus or, in the event of a violent incident, increases the likelihood of safety for students and staff. For instance, the course covers research-based strategies – such as Enhanced School Lockdown – that can be used in response to an active shooter on campus. This course is intended to be used in conjunction with a district’s Emergency Operations Plan or Crisis Response Plan.

Michael Dorn is one of the most credentialed school safety experts in the nation. He is the Executive Director of Safe Havens International, the leading non-profit campus safety center. Michael is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and is routinely used as a resource by the FBI, U.S. Department of Education, National Emergency Management Association, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and many other state and local agencies. Chris Dorn is an analyst at Safe Havens International and has served as a trainer for FEMA, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Israeli National Police and many other organizations.

The new Active Shooter for Administrators course is available as part of a subscription to the SafeSchools Online Staff Training System, used by thousands of districts around the world to increase safety compliance through effective staff training on important topics, such as Managing the Aftermath of Tragedy; Bullying Prevention, Visual Weapons Screening; Slips, Trips and Falls, and more.
