Citing Pennsylvania's high dropout rates, Gov. Tom Corbett promoted taxpayer-paid vouchers as the ticket to a better education for low-income students in the state's worst-performing school districts as he detailed a broader plan to improve and reshape public education in Pennsylvania.

A 19-month civil rights investigation of the Los Angeles Unified School District found that the district failed to provide an equal education to English-learners and black students, resulting in wide academic disparities, the U.S. Department of Education announced.

Earlier this month, the New Jersey Department of Education rejected a large number of charter schools proposed for successful suburban school districts, approving only four of 55 applications statewide. However, in 2011 there have been 27 charter school approvals.

This school year West Point (Miss.) School District has launched the IMPACT laptop initiative to increase student attendance and graduation rates. Funded through an Enhancing Education Through Technology grant, the IMPACT program enables every senior student to checkout a laptop, for a nominal usage fee, for the year, enhance classroom instruction and allow learners to complete homework online.
