A centralized technical education center that would serve high school students and adults in Southeast Kansas took a step closer to reality this week with the gift of $1 million by the Bicknell Foundation.

According to Pittsburg Superintendent Destry Brown, who is a member of the Crawford County Workforce Education Alliance and has been spearheading the effort, the center will bring together under one roof numerous technical education offerings by Fort Scott Community College in cooperation with the five school districts in Crawford County.

It also will allow the current program, which includes vocational education offerings such as construction and HVAC, to expand to include masonry, welding, emergency medical technician, culinary arts and other trades. High school students and non-traditional students who complete the courses earn certification and are job-ready.
