Every morning for the last school year, Darian Smith and Johnathon Compau have hopped on a school bus that takes them from Willow Run High School to Ypsilanti High School -- a 4.5-mile trek that became necessary when the two schools merged their Air Force JROTC programs.
Willow Run Community Schools and Ypsilanti Public Schools, the two districts that serve the two high schools, could take a dramatic -- and rare -- step further into consolidation by uniting into one district in the kind of union some lawmakers have been urging.
And although the two teens agree that consolidating the JROTC program was a good thing for them, they reflect the growing debate on whether the two districts should consolidate. "I think that's a bad idea," said Darian, 16, who fears the two high schools would merge. "At Willow Run, you get individual attention."
Johnathon is for it, because he sees opportunities for students to have more access to classes, provided the two high schools remain open.
