A new statewide tally shows 35 school budgets were defeated in town meeting voting, the most since 2003.
The numbers confirm Wednesday what appeared to be unfolding Tuesday night: 2014 was a difficult year for school spending plans. Still, 217 budgets passed, the vast majority.
The Vermont Superintendents Association tally is based on the results of 252 budget results through Town Meeting Day on Tuesday. The figures were updated from 34 defeats to 35 late Wednesday afternoon as final results trickled in.
