Broward parents and community leaders alike had a chance Tuesday to meet and ask questions of the two finalists for the Broward schools chief position. Monday night, the Broward County School Board named Robert Runcie, chief of staff to the Chicago Board of Education, and Bernard Taylor, superintendent of Grand Rapids Public Schools, as their top two finalists from a pool of five semi-finalists.

For the first time in decades, Center City has an opportunity to keep families with young children in Philadelphia instead of watching them flee to the suburbs. So says the Center City District, which Monday issued a report challenging the city's leaders and residents to capitalize on the stunning population growth of young people in Center City and beyond. Many of those new residents are starting to have children, creating a baby boom in neighborhoods such as Bella Vista and Fairmount.

If any school wants shelter from scorching heat, they can now get it from NASA. The U.S. National Aeronautic and Space Administration is offering space shuttle tiles and processed astronaut food to eligible schools and universities as historic artifacts. The lightweight tiles protected the shuttles from extreme temperatures when the orbiters re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, while space food was precooked so that refrigeration is not required and is ready to eat or could be prepared simply by adding water or by heating.

The third-largest school district in Washington state sought a court order Tuesday to force hundreds of striking teachers back to work, just hours after they walked off the job. The teachers began picketing in front of Tacoma's major high schools. They voted overwhelmingly Monday night to strike over issues that include pay, class size and the way the district's teachers are transferred and reassigned. The strike kept 28,000 students from attending classes.

More highly rated teachers in D.C. Public Schools are accepting performance-based bonuses than in the past, American University Radio WAMU reports. Of the 670 teachers eligible for bonuses, 70 percent accepted -- a 10 percentage point increase over the previous year, in which 60 percent of the 636 eligible teachers took the offer, according to WAMU. Based on numbers reported by WAMU, the less a teacher was offered for the bonus this year, the less likely the teacher was to accept. The one teacher who was offered the highest $25,000 bonus took the incentive.

The breakup of the mini-conglomerate follows public demands starting in July from the Ontario Teacher's Pension Fund and hedge fund Jana Partners LLC for a broad reorganization. The activists suggested breaking up the company into more than two pieces to highlight the value of its individual equities, commodities and financial analytics units. "It's a first step," said Pat English, chief executive of Fiduciary Management Inc, a large holder of McGraw-Hill shares, who argues for a more radical plan.
