In his ongoing effort to make New York City a technological powerhouse, Mayor Michael Bloomberg today revealed the 20 middle and high schools selected for the city’s new Software Engineering Pilot (SEP) program. As part of the program, the schools will get “comprehensive computer science and software engineering curriculum” for around 1,000 students. The program will launch this September and is expected to grow to 3,500 students by 2016.

Polson (Mont.) Superintendent Linda Reksten says the 42-year-old roof at Polson High School has to be fixed. “There is no other option,” Reksten says, but it will be up to School District 23 voters whether they’ll pay for it. No one else is going to. Ballots seeking a yea-or-nay vote on a nearly $2.5 million debt service bond were mailed out Feb. 5.

The Issaquah (Wash.) School Board approved an increase of $138,328 to Liberty High School’s construction bill Jan. 9. Most of the 13 items that accounted for the increase range between $1,000 and $6,000, including $4,668 to restore power to the parking lot lighting, $3,599 to reconnect cold water in the boiler room and $2,031 to demolish greenhouses that were not originally shown on the drawings.

School officials learned nearly a decade ago that there was little chance the state would pay to replace Brewer High School, which was built in 1958, so they turned to a zero interest federal bond and last year and was awarded one for more than $5 million.
