Karen Ann Tate, a former executive at two software companies and a former strategic consultant, along with Caitha Calvello Ambler, the Priory dean of middle school who also has taught at the private school and in the Vallejo (Calif.) School District, have been appointed to the Portola Valley (Calif.) School District board to replace board members who resigned this month.

Speaking at the monthly Board of Education meeting, Asean Johnson, 9, pointed out that schools chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett and board President David Vitale both visited the school last week and remarked on how quiet it was, how it had a "well-stocked library" and how "really exceptional" it was. "Why then are you closing Marcus Garvey when it has everything you say it should have?" Asean asked district leaders.

The Orleans Parish School Board is not properly accounting for the money it shares with the Recovery School District, resulting in $2.1 million misspent in fiscal year 2011, according to a report released yesterday by the Bureau of Governmental Research.

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg donated $350,000 to the Los Angeles school board campaign this week, records show. Bloomberg's contribution, which was filed Tuesday, will enlarge the already sizable war chest of the Coalition for School Reform, a political action committee led by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

In October, the Florida Department of Education requested more than $400 million for digital learning in its annual budget request submitted to state lawmakers. The money was needed to buy computers and upgrade public schools' bandwidth and wireless access, it said. But now department officials say they can make do with just $100 million for next year.

Members of the Fond du Lac Board of Education will choose officers and decide on their annual compensation during a reorganizational portion of Monday’s regular meeting. Elizabeth Hayes, who was recently re-elected to her tenth term on the board, currently serves as president. Julie Nett is vice president, Eric Everson, secretary/clerk, and Kathleen Nagle, treasurer, who was also re-elected, along with Mark Jurgella.

After nearly four months of nonstop action, the Richmond School Board paused Saturday to try to figure out what it wants to accomplish during its four-year term. During a five-hour retreat at Broad Rock Elementary School, the board set aside its daily duties and let two facilitators lead in-depth discussions on beliefs, goals and strategies.

The Board of Education is considering three separate policies geared toward improving the use and security of technology in Howard County (Md.) schools: Ensuring the proper security of all technology within the school system, defining the acceptable use of technology with the school system, and determining the proper use of social media among students and teachers.

The Goshen School Board voted Monday to add Goshen Community Schools to the Central Time Coalition's list of more than 40 Indiana school systems that support observing Central Standard Time in Indiana during the winter and Central Daylight Time the rest of the year.
