A student was shot and wounded at a rural California high school Thursday and a student suspect was taken into custody, officials said. The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, a community of fewer than 10,000 people amid oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles. A shotgun was used in the attack, officials said.

Bucking the national trend, Virginia voters, by a wide margin, want an armed guard in every school, but they do strongly back an assault weapons ban, according to a poll Thursday. A Quinnipiac University poll found that Old Dominion voters favor putting an armed police officer at every school, 66 percent to 29 percent.

I am very frustrated with the leadership of my children's preschool. After the Newtown killings, I went straight to the head of the school and asked why we can't have an armed guard outside the building. The school did send out an email to the entire school community to discuss current security policies. If it's a matter of the cost, then I told the head of school I would personally raise money for it. I think parents are outraged that our children are not as protected as they could be, but I cannot get her to budge.
