Superintendent Linda Callaway said a replacement for Scott Mann – who resigned earlier this month before he was sworn in as Menifee's first elected mayor – could be named as soon as Jan. 7, when the board will interview applicants. Trustees are paid $265 per month, with health benefits available.

Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, has appointed state Rep. Janet Adkins, R-Fernandina Beach, to the Education Commission of the States. The national group, which meets once annually, is geared to facilitate the “exchange of information, ideas and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders,” according to its website.

Racine, Wisc. Sen. John Lehman is back on the Senate Committee on Education, being appointed the committee’s ranking Democratic member Wednesday. Lehman, elected over Republican Van Wanggaard in this summer’s recall election, served as the committee’s chair following that victory and Democrats’ brief-lived majority that followed.

Sharon Scott-Hunter, 59, a retired assistant superintendent of the Chester Upland School District who spent 25 years teaching special education elementary students in Philadelphia, died of cancer Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. Mrs. Scott-Hunter was a "consummate educator," said Gregory Thornton, former superintendent of Chester Upland.

Administrative leaders from four Michigan school districts have been chosen as semi-finalists for the superintendent position in Rochester. The candidates' backgrounds are diverse: one is a former high school choir director. Another, a police detective. A former longtime technology director for Rochester Schools is also in the mix.

The search for a new superintendent for Huron Valley Schools Selects apparently is over. The school board unanimously approved starting contract negotiations with Jim Baker on Tuesday, following interviews with several superintendent candidates, including Baker. Baker is currently working in the position on an interim basis until the position is filled permanently. Baker previously worked as the district’s director of human resources.

Just five weeks after voters ousted him from office, Tony Bennett already has a new gig. The trailblazing but controversial Indiana schools chief, a key force in implementing Gov. Mitch Daniels' broad education reform agenda, was named Florida's education commissioner Wednesday. A hero in the education reform movement and a villain to teachers unions, Mr. Bennett was hailed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott for his "great track record of achievement in Indiana."

Spending reductions caused by the fiscal cliff would be devastating for Kentucky’s public schools, officials say. According to the Kentucky Department of Education, federal funding for public schools would be reduced up to $61 mil­lion per year for the next 10 years, affecting more than 1,350 jobs and nearly 130,000 students. Higher education officials in Kentucky and Indiana also are warily eying the fiscal cliff talks.

Former Seattle School Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson died Wednesday in Detroit at the age of 55. A friend and colleague who directs the Council of the Great City Schools, Michael Casserly, told The Seattle Times she was recently hospitalized with cancer.

The leader of Indiana's Senate Education Committee said Tuesday that Republicans shouldn't change the state schools superintendent position to one appointed by the governor following the election of a Democrat to that office. Republican Sen. Dennis Kruse said he would oppose any effort to make the job an appointed one, at least until incoming schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz's term expires in 2016.

The Wentzville School District has announced that CFO Dr. Kari Monsees has been selected as the new Superintendent of the Raymore-Peculiar School District near Kansas City, MO. Dr. Monsees has submitted his resignation to the Wentzville Board of Education effective June 30, 2013, which will allow him to assist in the transition process once a new CFO is hired.

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams announced today he's stripping all power from El Paso Independent School District trustees, citing a lack of trust from the community they represent. Williams plans to appoint a five-member board of managers to replace the school district's seven elected trustees, who have come under fire for failing to catch a districtwide cheating scheme devised by former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia.

The Tolland, CT school board gave the Tolland school district the go ahead to fill a Director of Educational Technology position at its Wednesday meeting. The full-time job, which is listed as a position under the teachers' contract and would be paid from the teacher salary account, would provide educational support information for several key initiatives.
