Arizona approves $12 million for school officers

A joint committee at the state Legislature approved $12 million in spending for 118 school-safety resource officers in 32 districts statewide.

About $7 million of the funding comes from Proposition 301, a school-funding initiative approved by voters in 2000, and the rest was approved by the Legislature during sessions in 2013 and 2014, according to Mike Philipsen, communications adviser for the Arizona Senate Republican Caucus.

Some of the 137 sites to receive money will get school officers for the first time, and some will have their funding renewed, Philipsen said.
