Arizona must boost school funding immediately

Arizona must immediately increase its funding for public schools by about $317 million, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge has ruled.

The money is the first payment on a bill that will total $1.6 billion over five years.

The judgment was issued Monday in a lawsuit that alleged the state shorted the public-school system for four years during the recession because voters had required lawmakers to cover the annual cost of inflation, which they chose not to fully do.
