It's the first day of school at Sycamore Elementary School. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the buses are rolling, but for most of Holt Public Schools, it's just another Tuesday during summer vacation.
Sycamore is one of two elementary schools in Holt that operates on a balanced calendar, meaning classes start in early August and won't end for the year before at least mid-June. This is Sycamore's second year on the balanced calendar, while Horizon Elementary School has been on the calendar for several years.
The Michigan Department of Education is handing out $2 million in grant money to a few districts to pilot transitioning schools to the balanced calendar, but Holt Public Schools wasn't among the districts receiving that money.
