Birmingham, Ala. launches first International Baccalaureate primary school

Birmingham's Cornerstone School announced Thursday that it has become the first elementary school in Birmingham to gain status as an International Baccalaureate World School primary school.

The IB Primary Years Program encompasses pre-K through fifth grade. Cornerstone is a pre-K through eighth grade school. The non-profit, Christian school is located in Woodlawn and serves primarily inner-city children in Birmingham.

"The reason we began the three year process of becoming an International Baccalaureate Primary school is because the IB curriculum aligns with Cornerstone's core values: excellence for God, excellence for children, and excellence for education," Nita Carr, the school's executive director, stated in a press release Thursday.
