Chicago Bracing for Wave of School Closures

Chicago parents, children and school personnel were bracing Thursday for the city's announcement of the closure of dozens of public elementary schools to reduce a looming $1 billion deficit, a move some community leaders said would disproportionately hurt African Americans.

Published reports late Wednesday said the announcement would occur Thursday, and teachers told the Associated Press the city had already begun telling them about individual school closings.

A Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman said she could not confirm that the announcement would come Thursday. Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett reiterated in a statement that the announcement would be soon.
