Chicago Charter School Advocates Rally for Fair Funding

Thousands of people wearing bright yellow caps rallied in the Loop's Federal Plaza on Wednesday evening in support of privately run charter schools, which are under more scrutiny because of the city's plan to close 53 neighborhood schools.

The rally was led by a new parents group called Charter Parents United. Demonstrators demanded a greater voice in decision-making at Chicago Public Schools and, in the words of one sign, "Equal dollars for our scholars."

Advocates of charters have argued the schools do not receive equitable funding from government sources. Leslie Magana, a Wicker Park resident, said she sends her two children to a charter school because she thinks they get a better education.
