When Cindy Gagich stands in front of the portraits of 14 past principals of Granite City High School, it's clear she'll be starting something new.
Starting July 1, Gagich will be the high school's first female principal. The Granite City School Board voted unanimously Jan. 8 to name her to the position now held by Jim Greenwald, who will become the district's superintendent after Harry Briggs retires June 30.
"It's an honor to be the first woman. This is is an excellent school district. There have been some very qualified female leaders," said Gagich, who has been vice principal of curriculum at the high school since 2007. "To me, this is very exciting to head a building of 1,900 students and 150 staff."
