Comstock (Mich.) Schools Work Hard to Turn around Struggling District

In theory, Stephanie Lemmer has weekends off in her job as principal of Comstock's North Elementary School.

Yet there she was on a recent Saturday, sitting in a supermarket parking lot and talking on her cell phone with the school's literacy coach about the latest round of reading data and ways to motivate students to finish the school year strong.

That wasn't the only school-related work that day for Lemmer. In between caring for her children, a 10-month and a 3-year-old, she caught up on her email, talked to a teacher who had questions about the science curriculum and prepared a presentation on communicating with parents.
