Substitute teacher Michael Young was called into work at IS 61 Wednesday. He caught a ride with science teacher Sharon Feldman after the city made the call to keep public schools open.

"I'm not happy with the decision. I do a lot of the coverages in the building. We have a lot of teachers who are out. It is a hardship for the teachers to get in. Sometimes it is icy. One of the main problems we actually have is once the teachers come here there is no place to park," Feldman said.

"I think it is difficult for teachers and students to get to school. Ideally you want everyone to come and learn and things to go as scheduled but Mother Nature takes over," Young added.

Students poured into school, some taking buses others walking. While most streets were clear, some parents and students worried about the slippery and cold conditions.
