Mayor Bloomberg may hate soda — but apparently, it’s OK for schoolkids to gobble up plenty of pizza at city expense.
Despite the health kick City Hall wants New Yorkers to go on, the number of pizza orders placed by the Department of Education has skyrocketed over the past few years, according to data compiled by Comptroller John Liu.
Last year, New York public schools placed 1,756 orders to pizza joints, the data show. That figure is a 73-percent increase over 2010, when 1,014 pizza parlor orders were placed. It’s also an increase over 2011, in which 1,536 orders were made.
