EPS/School Specialty Leverages Power of Tablets to Support Reading Intervention with 120 New eBooks

EPS, a division of School Specialty, launched its first eBooks for reading intervention today at the Virtual Schools Symposium in New Orleans. All 120 Illustrated Decodable Readers in its S.P.I.R.E. Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) reading intervention program will be available December 2012 for use on iPad, Kindle and NOOK.

S.P.I.R.E. is a comprehensive and multisensory reading intervention program that integrates phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, spelling and comprehension in a 10-step lesson plan especially designed for struggling readers. S.P.I.R.E. has been used throughout the country with great success by thousands of students who need a direct, systematic and sequential approach to reading. Based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, S.P.I.R.E. is now in its third edition, which incorporates the most recent research regarding best practices in reading and language arts instruction. The program incorporates many opportunities for practice, ensuring students experience continuous and visible success.

The program’s Illustrated Decodable Readers will soon be available as eBooks, providing students with a new and engaging practice opportunity. The books’ captivating topics and illustrations will appeal to young and reluctant readers. Books increase in difficulty, so there is a wide variety of challenge within the series. Both teachers and parents will find S.P.I.R.E. eBooks fit easily into their children’s daily routines, either at school as part of independent reading or fluency practice, and at home where parents and their children can read the books together. To assist teachers and parents, each title includes lists of target phonic concepts and sight words, as well as phonics skills the students may already know.
