Eschewing healthy lunches costs everyone

Sadly, the story “Fort Thomas School District Drops Federal Lunch Dollars” (Aug. 9) is another example of leaders’ failing to lead, not looking at the big picture and most likely promoting their own personal bias or political agenda. Fort Thomas school leaders have chosen to give up their federal lunch subsidies so they don’t have to meet the new federal guidelines for more nutritious student school meals.

Here are the facts that led to the creation of the new federal nutrition guidelines for our school’s lunchrooms and first lady Michelle Obama’s focus on childhood nutrition.

• Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The obesity increase is due to lack of exercise and to diets high in processed foods, devoid of nutrients. Obese children become obese adults. We are now raising the first generation of children that will not live longer than their parents, due to the health issues created by early-onset obesity and diabetes.
