Federal Proposal Targets School Snacks

Students know one way to get around the new healthier school lunch meals is to cough up some more money and opt for cafeteria à la carte items like brownies and cookies or vending machines snacks like chips and soda.

That detour from healthier eating may soon be history. 

The Agriculture Department is proposing new rules that would blacklist high-calorie drinks, fatty chips and sugary snack cakes sold in vending machines or in lunch lines.
