Fight over Crystal Lake (Ill.) bleachers may set law for school-city disputes

Since Crystal Lake South High School installed much larger bleachers, the couple say they've seen football fans peering into the windows of their daughters' bedrooms, and Kim Gurba has dealt with kids looking down into her dining room and yelling out to her.

The season is over for the Gators, but the battle over bleachers continues in another arena: the courts. Residents have sued, saying the school did not get city permission to build the bleachers; the school says it's immune to zoning laws.

"Our house would never sell," said another neighbor, Eileen Schwake, who's lived adjacent to the school for 25 years. "Who wants to look at this Berlin Wall of steel?"

Whatever the outcome of the legal fight, Judge Michael Chmiel said, "I think we'll make some new law here in McHenry County."
