Flint (Mich.) School District looking to call back 50 teachers, lay off 21 other staffers

The Flint School District could call back 50 teachers, along with laying off 21 more staff as the district wrestles with a nearly $16 million deficit it must erase in the next three years.

There are 21 layoffs recommended for the board of education’s approval at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Sarvis Conference Center, 1231 E. Kearsley St.

Twelve of the layoffs are non-teaching, non-clerical positions such as behavioral specialists, parent facilitators and cafeteria manager.

The other nine layoffs are to classified personnel like paraprofessionals, secretaries and clerks.
