Ohio Gov. John Kasich has appointed retired teacher Darryl Mehaffie to the Ohio state Board of Education. Mehaffie was sworn in privately yesterday in Columbus. Mehaffie will serve the remaining two years on the term of another Kasich appointee, retired superintendent Dennis Shelton. Shelton resigned in September. Among the tasks facing the state board are selecting a new state superintendent of public instruction, determining key details of new school report cards and overseeing the implementation of the new Common Core curriculum and tests.
Mehaffie, 69, taught fifth and sixth grades in the Northmont schools near Dayton for 30 years, according to a resume provided by the governor's office. His wife is also a former elementary school teacher. "Between the two of us we have more than 60 years of experience," he told StateImpact Ohio.
