The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the fiscal year 2014 winners of Farm to School grants Tuesday. In Kansas, $100,000 will go to the Kansas Department of Agriculture, which plans to distribute awards to eight school districts to promote locally sourced foods and support curriculum that teaches children about nutrition and where their food comes from.
Kevina Concannon, the USDA under secretary for food, nutrition and consumer services, said buying foods locally ensures fresh products for school lunches.
“So much food now is transported across the country,” Concannon said.
Moreover, he said, local purchases support the community, and planting school gardens offers extra opportunities for science and math lessons.
