The tragedy in Newtown, Conn., was any parent’s worst nightmare. Like many moms across the country, I went home and hugged my daughters a little tighter that night knowing that just as I never would expect something like that could happen at my own children’s school, neither did the mothers and fathers there.
Yet mere hours before we learned of the horrific events that took place in Newtown, I witnessed Michigan’s own Legislature pass a bill under the cover of night that actually encouraged more guns to be brought into our schools. It was a bill that was as misguided the day it was introduced as it was the day the governor vetoed it under intense public pressure. That bill sent a message to our kids that the only way we can keep them safe is to surround them with more and more instruments of violence.
As a mom who holds the safety and happiness of my two girls above all else, I believe we are better than that.
