Some elementary students in Duval County Public Schools are not getting their required health education, which violates state law.
Duval County Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said the missing health lessons don’t pertain to every elementary school, but there are some where the teaching isn’t happening. State law requires that districts teach elementary school students health education, and Vitti said the immediate fix is to have teachers present health-related lessons while giving their science, physical education or reading instruction.
School Board Chairwoman Becki Couch brought up the missing health education issue this past week.
“We know that healthy children come to school more frequently and are ready to learn,” said Couch, who taught health in the district. “They also need to learn the importance of avoiding drugs.”
