Henrico Schools Questioned About Discipline, Race

Henrico County Public Schools officials are struggling to answer tough questions from state and local elected officials over the disproportionate number of black students who are suspended or expelled from school in the county.

The questions arose initially from a national report that showed Henrico with the highest disparity between suspensions of black and white students of any school division in the state, and among the highest in the country involving black students with disabilities.

But those concerns have intensified with evidence that while Henrico schools have reduced their use of out-of-school suspensions significantly, black students account for more than 75 percent in a student body that is 37 percent black.
