High school stadiums belong near schools, not downtown

The Des Moines Public Schools recently expressed interest in the idea of building a multi-use stadium on the site of a former manufacturing plant downtown. Students "deserve the same quality of facilities as all the districts around us," Superintendent Tom Ahart was quoted as saying in a Des Moines Register story published May 3.

A few days later a group of the Register's editors and reporters sat down with Ahart to talk about the city's schools. Asked about the stadium, the superintendent seemed to back away from the idea, saying the news media made too much of the story.

"Is this high on my priority list? No, it is not," said Ahart during Tuesday's meeting.
