Ill. Schools Launch Food Scrap Program

At a time for thanksgiving, students in the East Alton Elementary School District are showing their appreciation for their planet by participating in a pilot food scrap recycling program.

Starting on Nov. 19, students are scraping uneaten food from their breakfast and lunch trays into collecting bins for composting, instead of throwing the food away as trash.

"The program is a win-win situation," Eastwood Elementary Principal Matt Stimac said. "We're reducing waste, teaching the kids to be good stewards and being economically sensible at the same time."
