Illinois city cracking down on school truants

In addition to all the usual new experiences that accompany the first day of school, East Chicago students and parents who don’t take attendance seriously will face big changes.

Police Chief Mark Becker announced “Operation Stay Smart,” a cooperative effort between police, school and city officials, the city court judge, Calumet College and Ivy Tech Community College to identify truant students and return them to the classroom. The program will begin on Wednesday, the first day of school, he said.

“The concept is to stay in school, stay smart and realize your dreams,” Becker said.
