Here's the problem: A great majority of high school and college students don't really know what they want to do, and wind up in a career path for which they are unsuited.
Sheri Smith of Boulder, Colo., believes that she and her colleagues have the answer to this dilemma. They have developed the Indigo Project, in collaboration with TTI Success Insights, to provide an assessment system that measures motivation, strengths and skills specific to an individual. Indigo then matches this evaluation to an extensive database of higher-education programs and, when appropriate, potential employers.
"The Indigo Report is not a 'touchy-feely' personality test," explained Smith, the founder and CEO of the Indigo Project. "It's backed by 30 years of research, and is used by numerous Fortune 500 companies to hire and develop employees in 90 countries. It is the best non-cognitive tool on the market.
"The most frequent comment we get from people who take the Indigo Report is, 'This is the most meaningful assessment I've taken.'"
For Smith and her colleagues at the Indigo Project, one of the big challenges is to reach a significant number of students who can benefit from this assessment. A marketing tool currently being used is an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, which can be viewed at www.igg.me/at/indigoproj
Through Indiegogo, students from all over the country can take advantage of the Indigo Report assessment and make it available to others. For just $50, students receive the assessment and access to Indigo's Career Pathways Database. A free assessment goes out to a student in need for every paid Indigo Report evaluation.
There are other incentives, too. For a $100 contribution, a student will receive all of the above plus an Indigo Project T-shirt. Corporate sponsorships are available to organizations that would like to donate assessments to students, schools or universities.
"It is not just another test to create numbers but a tool to find the life that best suits you," said Smith.
