The Lake Travis school district has selected the attendance zones for the 2014-15 school year, when Elementary No. 6 is set to open.
The school board voted unanimously to adopt the recommended attendance zones drawn by the attendance rezoning committee over a period of months. The new attendance zones, intended to accommodate for a new elementary school and the expansion of Hudson Bend Middle School, were created after a committee consisting of parents, teachers and community members consulted and gathered feedback from the community at large. The committee drew the attendance zones with the goal to effectively harness the projected population growth in the Lake Travis area and make optimal use of school space.
“It bears repeating that this is one of the most difficult things a school district does,” Superintendent Brad Lancaster said. “It’s a very emotionally charged thing, and it’s unavoidable that there are least two sides.”
A majority of the area in the western half of the district formerly attending Bee Cave Elementary School will now attend Elementary No. 6. The Sweetwater subdivision was moved from attending Serene Hills Elementary School to Elementary No. 6, and some of the Lake Travis Elementary School zone was transferred to the Lakeway Elementary School zone.
