Legal action possible following school funding cuts in N.Y.

Two education organizations are conducting a state-wide campaign to visit more than a dozen school districts and gain first-hand knowledge of cuts to programs, staff and resources.

From the tone of a tour kick-off event on Monday, it sounded very possible that - using evidence gathered from the tour - legal action could be taken against the state on behalf of parents and students.

“From what I’ve seen over the past year, there have been compelling resource deficiencies in areas needed most in schools,” said senior attorney Wendy Lecker with the Education Law Center. “Districts have nowhere else to cut and recent studies have found that a large percentage of districts could be fiscally insolvent in the next two years.”
