Louisiana school funding plan heads to final stop

A $3.6 billion public school spending plan is headed to the House of Representatives for final approval.

The House Education Committee Wednesday unanimously approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 55 by Sen. Conrad Appel, R-Metairie, after raising questions about some of the priorities in the plan.

Rep. John Bel Edwards, D-Amite, questioned Appel’s rejection of the original formula sent by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education because it had a built-in growth factor. After that rejection, BESE reworked the formula and included additional money for high-cost students with disabilities and other changes to the plan.
