Later this week, parents will learn whether their children's schools are making passing grades.
The Louisiana Department of Education is replacing its "Star System" with letter grades in hopes that parents can better understand how schools are performing.
"Most parents don't understand what the stars mean," said Scott Norton, head of accountability in the state's K-12 public schools. "If a school puts out a sign saying 'We're a two-star school,' people didn't know what that meant."
But if it has the same grade and puts out a sign saying "We're a 'D' school," parents would understand that things aren't all that great.
