Making water cool at Ukiah schools

During lunch recess at Oak Manor Elementary School Wednesday, most of the thirsty kids did not visit a drinking fountain to get water. Instead, they lined up to fill their colorful plastic bottles at the school's nifty new "hydration station."

Designed and built by Larry Dail and Darrell Humphrey, maintenance technicians for the Ukiah Unified School District, the hydration station is basically a cooled water fountain on wheels. Pulled onto the playground during recess, UUSD officials say it encourages the students to drink more water by providing a cooler and better-tasting version than what comes out of the fountains.

"The water fountains are usually kind of warm and yucky," said Lori Klee, Oak Manor site secretary, adding that the school got the station about two weeks ago.
