Manatee County school district officials will be raising the weekly fees for the before- and after-school programs in 19 elementary schools.
In a meeting Monday, a parent pleaded with Manatee school board members not to increase the fees from $40 to $45 per week.
The fee hike "isn't what we need right now," said Kristen Steffan, the parent who spoke to board members. "It would be my request to not allow this to proceed at any time."
Superintendent Tim McGonegal said that the schools offering this service have not raised their fees in the past six to seven years. Even with the increase, he said the fees are still lower than other programs in the county. The school-based programs are staffed by teachers and aides.
