Maryland county considers offering tech course to middle schoolers

Washington County Public Schools students might one day have the chance to earn their technology-education credit that is required for graduation in middle school or even take it online.

Rick Akers, the school system’s director of secondary education and student services, said last week that making the Foundations of Technology course available to middle school students will not happen for the 2014-15 school year, but such a move is in the discussion stage.

Akers said he got the OK from the Maryland State Department of Education for such a move, but the local school system is not set up for that scenario.
