Maryland school board passes $1.02 billion operating budget

The Board of Education unanimously passed its $1.02 billion budget, though some board members expressed frustrations how a one-time increase using funds from their health care balance will be sustained.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools got almost everything it wanted from its requested $1.046 budget. It funds teacher raises in addition to a new salary scale, and funds a 2 percent increase for all other employees. It contains $5.3 million for Monarch Global Academy, $500,000 short of its original request.

It also includes funding for 17.5 positions in order to expand magnet programs and add staff for the growing bilingual population. The request included 75 new teaching positions, including special education support, school counselors, American Sign Language teachers and about 32 teachers for increasing enrollment. Most were not funded.
